New Things to Learn in Adelaide City Phase

In Adelaide city phase, I worked at the Worth Gallery, an art shop and consultancy owned by Amy Sierp for three weeks. This work experience is very new to me because my background study is English Education, but I am really eager to learn many new things.

Every Thursday, Amy had an art class for primary school children next to her house called “The Barn”, and I was given the chance to teach drawing at The Barn. So, we closed the gallery earlier because it took 30 minutes drive to Stirling, to Amy’s house.


We started the Arts class at 3.30 PM in the garden near the house, and the garden was really beautiful. There was a big tree in the middle of the garden with so many kinds of flowers around. We sat on the grass in a circle. There were eight students who attended the class on that day. At first, I demonstrated on how to make a portrait sketch. I drew one of the students, Charlotte, using charcoal. Then I gave the drawing to her. She was really happy. After that, all the students could draw everything they wanted in the garden. They drew flowers, trees, leafs, and even their family. I helped them to draw the objects by giving tips and trick. After they finished their drawings, we walked around the garden. Apparently, the garden was very wide. There was a very big field, and we saw rabbits playing around on it. They also had a hidden cave in between the trees. It was a really great walk in the afternoon. I’ve never found the house which had a really wide and fancy garden like this. This was one of the most interesting experiences I got in my work placement.


On the other day, my host family and I went to shopping center for their Christmas shopping. We bought toys for Isaac and Noel and for their nieces and nephews. It was a very big shopping in the very big shopping center in Tea Tree Plaza. That day was one of my favourite days with my family, because we were all going out together. While normally we could not because Alison and Scott had the different schedules and they had to take care of their children and so many other activities. So then we took a selfie together with a really big smile.


Then I met their parents, Pa and Pat. They are very lovely. They told me a lot about their travel stories to other states of Australia, Canada, Africa, Asia, and Europe. Pat was a policeman, but when he retired they decided to travel the world together. They are really nice couple. They taught me a lot of things about Australians, how to make dried apricots and salad. On the last day before I left my host family, we did Barbeque together with Pa and Pat. I also did a presentation about Bengkulu and Indonesia. Then I let Alison try my traditional costumes. They said they were really happy to have me in their family and I am also really grateful to have them as my family.

Lenswood Primary School

If I am talking about Lenswood, it always makes me upset. It is one of the most heartbreaking moments in my entire life to leave Lenswood. Eventually, Lenswood has ended up being my second home. It ripped my heart and feeling to leave Lenswood, but I will surely be coming back to Lenswood as an Indonesian teacher. At the first time I got to Lenswood, I was very disappointed because it is very far away to get to the city of Adelaide. I was sad because I would scarcely come over to the city. My Irreplacable Moment in a Beautiful Tiny School in Adelaide

24th November 2016, no clouds in the horizon, “its sunny day,” I said as Quantas Aeroplane landed in Adelaide International Airport.

As I went out of the arrival gate, I felt the wind froze my tropical skin. I checked my phone connected to airport’s Wi-Fi, it was 8 degree Celsius. South Australia was known as the driest state in Australia. Soon, I tied up my Indonesia-official attire as I and other 16 delegates of Australia-Indonesia Youth Exchange Program walked to the chartered bus in the parking area.

A new page of my life adventure has just been turned….

During the orientation, we visited many new places. We had some excursions to Glenelg beach and Hahndorf. Glenelg beach was located only 12 km from the heart of Adelaide City, it was a charming seaside suburb with sandy white shores, bustling shops and restaurants and attractions for all ages. Glenelg was the site of South Australia's original mainland settlement in 1836 and there was a free museum located in the Town Hall in Moseley Square with interactive exhibits about history and heritage.

While Hahndorf is a small town in the Adelaide Hills region of South Australia which previously was a centre for farming and services. It was a popular tourist destination and Australia's oldest surviving German settlement. Many of the original buildings and traditions had been retained and Hahndorf's village atmosphere was complimented by a myriad of cafes and speciality shops.

Eventually, we closed our orientation week with a dinner in Fortuna restaurant where some AIYEP alumni in Adelaide, member of Australia-Indonesia Youth Association (AIYA) and member of Indonesian Students Association and Australia-Indonesian Association of South Australia came.

The following day, my friends and I were fetched in YHA by our host parent to spend 3 weeks to have homestay and work placement experience in Australia. We had homestay program because the main goal of this program is to promote cross-cultural understanding between Australia and Indonesia through people to people contact. Through host family we learned and experienced closer each other’s culture in terms of food, lifestyle, values, customs, and languages in daily life. Similar to homestay, work placement was intended to allow the participants to learn work culture of each other’s country and to share what they got from their representative country.

Referring to my background in education, I chose to have a work placement in a school and my choice went to a primary school. One of the reasons I chose primary level was that I want to continue my magister study majoring early childhood education. Hence I believed my experience that I got in my work placement would give me a lot of knowledge and become a stepping-stone to pursue higher education. Another reason was that, as a teacher, I wanted to improve education quality of Indonesia and shared knowledge that I obtained from a work placement in Australia to my community once I returned to Indonesia. And here, I was placed in Lenswood Primary school.


Lenswood Primary School was relatively a small school situated in the beautiful Adelaide hills and was surrounded by orchards and vineyards. The first day at this school to undergo internship was an unforgettable experience in my life since this was the first time for me to see and be directly involved in the Australian education system. I discovered many unique things during my internship in this place. For instance, every morning the teachers would come earlier than the students. They stood in front of the school to welcome students and greet the parents while having light conversation. This practice built a good relationship between teachers and parents to work together to achieve learning goals. Lenswood has a tradition of excellent parental and community involvement in the school. The students, parents, staff and wider community value the school highly.

In this school, I also saw how teachers educated students assertively to be disciplined, independent and polite. If students made mistake, they would be reprimanded by teacher or they had to do community service such as looking after the garden without the need of giving corporal punishment. Pupils were also taught to tidy up the equipment they used with their own and the teacher just observed.

In addition, students were also involved in looking after the native and vegetable gardens they planted and used the vegetables in cooking sessions. Every Monday, the school also had SRC (Student Representative Council) where they discussed about various problems occurring at school to be solved together in order to give better changes. This was the media to build leadership skill and develop programs to move students into responsible adolescence. As quoted in the Interview with the principal, Mrs. Leah, Lenswood Primary School had high expectations for its students and offered many opportunities to develop students’ skills through explicit teaching, specific literacy and numeracy blocks and specialist teaching in arts, science and technology. Besides, sport was highly valued and intended to teach students leadership skill.


It was only a week but I got a lot of new knowledge about Australian education system here which was very propitious to be applied in Indonesia. Here, I got a chance to be assistant teacher in almost subject and in all year student. I also trusted to Introduce Indonesia by giving presentation about Indonesia, teaching Indonesian Language and also teaching some traditional dances from Indonesia such as Saman dance. I found the students are very interested and enthusiastic to learn Indonesian culture. It was proven by the survey from students that picked up Bahasa Indonesia as the language lesson instead of Mandarin for the next academic year.

Visiting the South Australia Museum

On Saturday November 12th 2016, I and my host family visited the South Australia Museum. It was natural history museum and research institution in Adelaide established in 1956. It occupies a complex of buildings on North Terrace in the Cultural precinct of the Adelaide Park land. We lived in Colonel Light Garden and it was quite far from our home to the Museum. It is about 9 kilometers away. We went to the city by car and it took 20 minutes driving to the Museum.

We arrived safely at the location around the Museum, we parked the car and we walked slowly down through the small path straight into the Museum. We saw many people from difference places came there and enjoying their vocation. As we walked slowly inside, we went into the animal’s section and Dad showed me all the different unique of animals that I have never seen before. I was surprised when I looked around and it was incredible. Then we got into the lift and went up to another section. We walked slowly to the fossils section and started to look one by one. It was the remaining fossils from Aborigine people for thousands of years ago. While we walked around and visited several places, we took some pictures as well.

We moved furthermore to the Arts section and looked around it was different types of motifs, some other painting and lots of designs on the wood and stones from many years ago. It was expressive and amazing that they collected from different areas all over the world. Furthermore, my Dad held my hand and took me to another room. He wanted to make me surprise, he took me in to that room and show me a big glass box. With anxiously, I looked into the big glass and finally I saw the “Bird of Paradise” which symbolized the Island of West Papua that happen to be a place where I came from. I could not do anything when I looked at the Paradise Birds but what I felt was my heart touched and tears of my eyes slowly dropped in a seconds. It reminded me of my home where I was born and grown up.

First Week in Adelaide with Host Family
